Cocaine History And Popularity

Competing only with alcohol and marijuana use, cocaine is one of the most popular substances abused in the western world. In addition, cocaine use is also surrounded by an aura of fame and wealth, augmenting its popularity as the drug of the upwardly mobile. Though, this image of the cocaine user may have peaked in the “yuppie” and “me” generations of the 1980’s and 90’s, this aura has accompanied the drug for most of its historical relationship with the west.

From Pope Leo XIII, who purportedly carried a hip flask of Vin Mariani, the 1860 popular cocaine laced wine, with him wherever he went, to Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional super-detective, who regularly injected himself with cocaine. Doyle’s character lauded the drug to his assistant Dr. Watson, declaring cocaine to be, “so transcendentally stimulating and clarifying to the mind that its secondary action is a matter of small moment.” And everyone is familiar with the popular drink, Coca Cola, which included a “pinch” of coca leaves in it’s original recipe until 1906 (after 1906, the company used decocainized leaves), when the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in Congress. Even the famous story, “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” is known to have been written by Robert Louis Stephenson while he was on a six-day cocaine binge.

Only briefly, during the “moral panic,” of the early twentieth century, was the drug’s abuse regulated to the “bohemians, gamblers, high- and low-class prostitutes, night porters, bell boys, burglars, racketeers, pimps, and casual laborers,” according to the 1903 Journal of American Pharmacy. Though, while it’s abuse was derided, it remained popular as a stimulant and cure-all for the “enlightened” population. Even as late as 1938, the Larousse Gastronomique was published carrying a recipe for “cocaine pudding”.

Cocaine’s popularity soared again in the seventies and eighties disco culture, with popular culture portraying it as the drug of the rich and famous, the yuppie and the college student. Cocaine was portrayed favorably, or at least exciting, in many movies, such as “St. Elmo’s Fire,” where its casual use is portrayed as normal as alcohol consumption. Cocaine shared the spotlight in the music industry as well, with such popular hits as Eric Clapton’s song, Cocaine,” and “Cocaine Decisions,” by Frank Zappa.

As mentioned, in the early part of the twentieth century, society was beginning to recognize the addictive and destructive nature of cocaine. While the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was introduced to required labeling of all cocaine products, it wasn’t made illegal until the 1914 Harrison Narcotics Act, which banned all nonprescription use of cocaine products. This Act also improperly labeled cocaine a narcotic, of which the misclassification has continued throughout popular culture (Cocaine is a stimulant).

Although technically outlawing all distribution and use of cocaine, it was still legal for registered companies and individuals. Cocaine did not become a controlled substance until 1970 when the United States listed it in the Controlled Substance Act. Until that point, enforcement was low and its use was relatively open and rarely prosecuted in the United States. Yet, even this classification did not deter its use and the eighties saw a dramatic rise in its use by American teenagers.

Around the same time, a new development, the introduction of “crack cocaine,” into society, made it more accessible to lower income neighborhoods, causing its popularity to sour in the later prt of the twentieth century. “Crack” is a concentrated cooked, “free-base,” highly addictive and highly potent form of the cocaine drug. The name derives from the cracking sound of evaporating water as the cocaine solution is cooked.

Currently, world consumption of cocaine is approximately 600 metric tons annually, with the United States consumption proximately half of the total, and Europe 25% of world’s consumption. In 2005, the U.S. market alone exceeded $70 billion in revenues, exceeding most major U.S. corporations. Today, cocaine’s street value is approximately $50 to $75 a gram (called a “fitty rock), and $125 for 3.5 grams (an 1/8 ounce called an “eight ball”).

Cocaine use is a major world industry, whose popularity has only increased over the years, despite the increased awareness of its addictive nature and dangerous effects. Even with the introduction of so-called designer drugs, cocaine remains the second most popular drug in America (after marijuana). It rarely, if ever, used for medicinal purposes today, as safer drugs have replaced its indicated use. Yet, in spite of it all, cocaine, its use and abuse, will have to be contended with for many years to come.

Racial disparity my hairy posterior. I’m certainly not defending the use of powder cocaine, but it’s simply a FACT that users of powder cocaine do not wreak the societal havoc that crack addicts do.

If we simply must level the two sentences, lengthen those for powder cocaine, don’t reduce the ones for crack.
g: That’s a load of crap. I don’t care WHAT the motivation is. The fact remains that users of powder cocaine do not generally hold up liquor stores, commit drive bys, or carjack people. Throw away the key.

Further, did you completely miss the last part of my question? If it’s simply the disparity which bothers you, let’s lengthen the sentence for powder cocaine. That wouldn’t break my heart.
lltrix: Have you ever even SEEN an inner city? I work in one of the crappiest sections of Detroit. Crackheads commit FAR more than their share of crimes in order to feed their habit. I don’t particularly care if it’s inhumane or not. Lock them up and throw away the key. Anyways, how stupid does someone have to be to smoke crack for the first time? It’s not as if the effects aren’t known to every warm, breathing human in the country.
citizenjane: All I can say is “Wow!” We don’t agree often, but when we do, we really do! Can I drive the bulldozer?

Cocaine to be used in schools

Cocaine is one hell of a drug

Cocaine is one hell of a drug

A new government initiative is being launched, which aims to decrease school children’s contact with dangerous drug dealers, improve attendance and increase productivity.  The main idea behind this initiative, lead by Gordon Brown, is to replace free milk for children with free crack.  This is likely a more popular idea than that of Margaret Thatcher, who abolished free milk in schools.  Instead of “milk snatcher”, Gordon Brown is to be known for “spreading the crack around”.

It is thought that the main reason for this highly creative directional change on the part of the government is to get children off the streets between the hours of 8:30 and 3:30.  It is expected that absence from schools will decrease as the well known addictive properties of the drug take hold.  Studies have also shown that productivity in schools is likely to increase as a cause of the drug.  Unfortunately productivity may be followed by depression, so part of the governments budget for the initiative is to be spent on a small army of counsellors and psychiatrists.  This move has been welcomed by counsellors and psychiatrists.

It is not yet known wether the drug will also be rationed to teachers, some of whom are reported to spend as much as half their saleries on such drugs in order ease the pressures of dealing with dilinquant teenagers.  A spokesman from the National Union of Teachers (apprpriatedly abbreviated to NUT) has gone on record saying that strikes may follow if such teacher hand outs are not given.

What You Should Know About Cocaine Addiction

Barney Garcia asked:

Cocaine is extracted from coca scrub and is the most powerful stimulant having addictive and anesthetic properties. It is commonly known as ‘coke’ and was once upon a time the ingredient of coca cola. Cocaine has produced a major health hazard in America. The complication arising from use is difficult to tackle. The effect of cocaine is so energizing that it numbs the intellect producing a sense of euphoria. It is an addiction which is difficult to break.

An Over View Of the Drug Named Cocaine

Cocaine is available in the form of white crystalline powder. It is chemically changed so as to produce the street drug ‘crack’ which is widely used by drug abusers to smoke.

The route of administration of cocaine is through injections, smoking and inhalation.

The spread of HIV infection due to the use of injected cocaine has become a cause of concern for the society.

How Do People Fall Prey To Cocaine Addiction?

There are various factors which push a person into the clutches of this dreaded drug.

We find many people trying to make easy money by the sale of this drug in streets. The jobless and depressed are easily duped by the touts.

Psychological vulnerability is the root cause in most of the instances. The feeling of rejection, depression due to divorce, sexual abuse and marital discord are some of the mental trauma faced by the current generation. Hence they try to forget the problems by using such euphoric drugs.

Cocaine is a substance which produces a desire so over powering that breaking free from its habit in the initial stage itself is difficult.

People who have inclination to lose weight also end up getting addicted and landing in serious complication like malnutrition.

When to Suspect That the Patient Is Addicted To Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine addiction like all others doesn’t go unnoticed even in initial stages if you look for following symptoms.

-The absenteeism from school, work places and education institutes should be inquired.

-Demanding money, interest in money matters and stealing money are not to be neglected as they are indicators of the forthcoming problems.

-Disinterest in job, family matters, study, food and grooming are common in abusers. The expression and habit of abuser are indicative of addiction.

-The signs of depression and mood swings show the mental involvement of addict. When the patient shows psychological involvement it is time to act fast.

Take good care of your health and say no to drugs.

What is Crack Cocaine?

Cocaine is an alkaloid found in leaves of the South American shrub Erythroxylon coca. It is a powerfully reinforcing psychostimulant. The drug induces a sense of exhilaration in the user primarily by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the midbrain. If the predictions of The Hedonistic Imperative are vindicated, then future millennia will witness what Robert Anton Wilson once called “hedonic engineering”. Mature enhancements of currently drug-induced states of euphoria will be transformed into a absolute presupposition of sentient existence. Gradients of life-long happiness will be genetically pre-programmed. “Peak experiences” will become a natural part of everyday mental health. Cocaine, alas, offers only a tragically delusive short-cut.
As a rule of thumb, it is profoundly unwise to take crack-cocaine. The brain has evolved a truly vicious set of negative feedback mechanisms. Their functional effect is to stop us from being truly happy for long. Nature is cruelly parsimonious with pleasure. The initial short-lived euphoria of a reinforcer as uniquely powerful as crack will be followed by a “crash”. This involves anxiety, anhedonia, depression, irritability, extreme fatigue and possibly paranoia. Physical health may deteriorate. An intense craving for more cocaine develops. In heavy users, stereotyped compulsive and repetitive patterns of behaviour may occur. So may tactile hallucinations of insects crawling underneath the skin (“formication”). Severe depressive conditions may follow; agitated delirium; and also a syndrome sometimes known as toxic paranoid psychosis. The neural after-effects of chronic cocaine use include changes in monoamine metabolites and uptake transporters. There is down-regulation of dopamine D2 receptors to compensate for their drug-induced overstimulation. Thus the brain’s capacity to experience pleasure is diminished.

United States gangs are expanding their sphere of influence here and around the world. Many gangs are much more sophisticated now days and are run much like military units and corporations and therefore are much more of a threat to law enforcement as well as citizens.

U.S. gangs have forged illegal business connections with other gangs in the states as well as in Mexico and Afghanistan seeking more lucrative drug markets.

These alliances make them much more dangerous and this organization is much more threatening. Many of the American gangs buy or are fronted drugs from the new alliances from as far away as Afghanistan where drug trades and whole selling take place. This proliferation and gangs adoption of terrorist tactic’s is worldwide and is increasingly accompanied by beheadings, shootings, kidnappings and other extreme violence and is threatening society in general.

It is estimated that there are 25,000 or more gangs currently operating in the U.S. and more than 1,000.000 active gang members. Most current gang members in the U.S. are believed to possess automatic AK 47’s, shot guns, hand guns, other weapons such as explosives and police report confiscating more and more bullet proof vests. Gangs conduct all sorts of criminal activity in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Mexico, South America, Afghanistan and else where. Although most gang activity is concentrated in major urban areas, gangs also are proliferating in rural and suburban areas of the country.

Operation Community Shield that was begun in February 2005 to dismantle street gangs is hard at work but many feel it’s been a losing battle. The Department of Homeland Security said the program had led to about 7,500 arrests involving violent gangs, including Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, whose members are from El Salvador, Honduras and other Central American countries.

About 1,300 violent gang members who are in this country illegally were arrested in the last couple of years in U.S. Government crackdowns, federal officials announced. “We’ve arrested quite a number of very serious criminals – individuals who frankly have worn out their welcome by coming into this country illegally and committing more crimes when they got here,” said Julie L. Myers, assistant secretary of homeland security for immigration and customs enforcement.

Large street gangs readily employ violence to control and expand drug, gun, prostitution and other illegal activities, targeting rival gangs and dealers who neglect or refuse to pay extortion fees. Members also use violence to ensure that members adhere to the gang’s code of conduct or to prevent a member from leaving. Authorities throughout the country report that gangs are responsible for most of the serious violent crime in the major cities of the U.S. Gangs engage in an array of criminal activities including torturing, assault, burglary, drive-by shooting, extortion, homicide, identification fraud, money laundering, prostitution operations, robbery, sale of stolen property, and weapons trafficking.

Street gangs, outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMGs), and prison gangs are the primary distributors of illegal drugs on the streets of the United States. Gangs also smuggle drugs into the United States and produce and transport drugs within the country.

U.S. gangs are now working hand in hand with Mexican cartel gangs, according to a DEA official who wants to remain anonymous.

Street gang members convert powdered cocaine into crack cocaine and produce most of the PCP available in the United States. Gangs, primarily produce marijuana and methamphetamine. In addition, gangs increasingly are involved in smuggling large quantities of cocaine, marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, and MDMA (also known as ecstasy a sex drug) into the United States from foreign sources of supply.

Gangs primarily transport and distribute powdered cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine, MDMA, and PCP in the United States. And that illegal activity generates millions of dollars for the gangs and their members.

Gangs collect millions of dollars per month selling illegal drugs, trafficking weapons, operating prostitution rings, producing porno films and selling stolen property. Gangs launder proceeds by investing in real estate, recording studios, motorcycle shops, car washes and construction companies. They also operate various cash-based businesses, such as porno shops, porno movie houses, barbershops, music stores, restaurants, catering services, tattoo parlors, launder mats, donut shops, and strip clubs, in order to commingle drug proceeds with funds generated through legitimate commerce.

Anaheim police officer J. Furbish collects information from motorcycles parked out in front of a home, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, in Anaheim, Calif. Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmdit says eight members of the “Set Free Soldiers” gang were taken into custody early Wednesday for investigation of attempted murder. A motorcycle gang with the name of Set Free Soldiers who claim to be Christian bikers  have describe themselves as “a group of men who love Jesus and love to ride hard. We are not your normal motorcycle club. Some say we are too good for the bad guys, and too bad for the good guys.” Click on or Google:  Christian Bikers Busted for Murder

“We don’t argue that,” the statement says. “All we Soldiers know is that we take care of our own and help plenty of others along the way. We try to live right in this wrong world and let our light shine wherever we may go.”

This violent gang sells videos of the group in action, including some showing members in fistfights with other people, their web site offers apparel for sale. An onesie for babies with the words “Soldier Made” written on the front in faux alphabet blocks.

Recently several members of the Set Free Soldiers where arrested for attempted murder after they allegedly got into a bar fight with the Hells Angels. Seven members of the biker gang remained in custody on $1 million bail after their arrest for allegedly stabbing two Hells angels. In what is mostly thought of as an upper middle class naborhood in Newport Beach California late last month. Three members of the Hells Angels were also arrested.

According to the L A Times, more than 150 officers descended on affluent neighborhoods across Orange County California, serving search and arrest warrants on members of the Christian gang and the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, police said. Four search warrants were served at four homes in the 300 block of South Archer Street, near Brookhurst Street and Broadway, belonging to members of the Set Free Soldiers – a biker gang allegedly masquerading as a church, said Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmidt.

Authorities obtained search warrants for residences of members of both motorcycle gangs, including two residences in Costa Mesa, one in Rancho Santa Margarita and four in Anaheim, said Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor. A large number of weapons and ammunition were seized in Anaheim and Costa Mesa, he said.

Overall in the case, 10 have been arrested, with police hunting for an 11th suspect, authorities said. Of these 10, seven are Set Free Soldiers arrested for alleged conspiracy to commit murder; one of them is Pastor Phil Aguilar, 60, of Anaheim, police said. He is described as the founder and director of Set Free Churches Worldwide, according to the group’s Web site.

The stabbings, which officials believe involved members of the two motorcycle gangs, occurred the afternoon of Sunday, July 27, at Blackie’s By the Sea, near the Newport Beach pier, Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor said.

Newport Beach officers responded to the large fight, but everyone had fled the scene, Sailor said.

Police said they determined that those in the fight were members of the Hells Angels and Set Free Soldiers. Sailor said it appears that the two stabbing victims were Hells Angels and a man hit by a pool ball was a Set Free Soldier.

A neighbor to one of the Archer houses with Set Free Soldiers said that the group has been a nuisance. Having young girls there all hours of the day and night.”

The neighborhood has been trying to get them out of here for years,” said Sharon Murphy, 50. “It’s supposed to be a sober-living place, but they’re always at the liquor store buying beer. They’re running their motorcycles all night long. They own three or four houses up and down the street.”

Officers arrived at 4:30 a.m. Patrol officers blocked off streets, and SWAT team members were fully outfitted – some police in camouflage and helmets rode hanging off of the sides of Anaheim police tactical vehicles and Jeeps.

By 8:30 a.m., patrol officers started letting residents of the block back in, and tow trucks arrived at around 9 a.m. to start seizing property.

Officers from Anaheim, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the operation.
